Path to Purpose – Getting On

Practical support to help you move forward

Sometimes getting back into work, training or volunteering isn’t just about finding a vacancy.

Low confidence, difficult relationships, stress, isolation, parenting pressures or simply not knowing where to start can all make moving forward feel harder than it should.

Getting On is a TalkFIRST project offering practical, person-centred support to help people build confidence, recognise their strengths and take positive steps towards employment, volunteering, training and a more settled everyday life.

Who is it for?

The project is particularly aimed at people who are not currently working, or who don’t yet feel ready to take that next step.

You might be dealing with:

  • Low confidence or self-esteem
  • Stress or poor emotional wellbeing
  • Difficult relationships or conflict at home
  • Parenting pressures
  • Social isolation
  • Neurodiversity
  • Uncertainty about your skills or strengths
  • Lack of confidence about work, training or volunteering

You do not need to have everything figured out before you contact us. That is the whole point.

Support built around you

Everyone’s circumstances are different, so there is no one-size-fits-all programme.

We will work with you to understand what is getting in the way, what you want to achieve and what support would genuinely help.

This could include:

Building confidence
Helping you recognise what you are already good at and where you would like to develop.

Communication and relationships
Developing communication and conflict-resolution skills that can help at home, in the community and eventually in the workplace.

Practical everyday support
Looking at things such as routines, self-care, parenting and other issues that may be making everyday life harder.

Connecting you with your community
Helping you access local activities, volunteering opportunities and other support available close to home.

Emotional wellbeing
Providing a listening ear and, where appropriate, helping you access more specialist support.

Mediation and relationship support
Where difficult relationships are creating additional stress, we can provide support to improve communication and reduce conflict.

Advocacy and practical help
Where needed, we may also be able to accompany or support you with meetings and appointments.

It starts with a conversation

There are no complicated referral forms or unnecessary hoops to jump through.

You can contact TalkFIRST directly by phone or email, or another organisation you are already working with can introduce you to us.

We deliberately keep the process simple so that asking for help doesn’t become another barrier in itself.

What happens next?

Most people will work with us for around 4 to 8 sessions, depending on what they need.

Sessions are usually around 1–2 hours and can take place weekly or every other week.

Support can take place at:

Ashland House
Ince Community Centre
Sunshine House
or another suitable local community venue.

Sessions are designed to be relaxed, supportive and practical. The application actually sums the TalkFIRST approach up nicely: sometimes a brew, a biscuit and the time to properly talk can be just as important as the formal work.

What do we hope you will get from it?

The goal isn’t simply to push people straight into a job.

We want people to leave the project feeling more confident, more connected and better able to manage the things that may previously have been holding them back.

That could mean:

  • Feeling more optimistic about the future
  • Understanding your strengths
  • Having healthier relationships
  • Managing conflict more effectively
  • Feeling less isolated
  • Becoming more involved in your community
  • Exploring volunteering or training
  • Developing interpersonal and life skills
  • Feeling more ready for employment
  • Eventually moving into work or self-employment

TalkFIRST’s approach is about helping people make sustainable progress rather than ticking a box and moving on.

A different kind of employment support

Path to Purpose recognises that people are not defined by whether or not they currently have a job.

Stable relationships, confidence, communication skills, emotional wellbeing and feeling connected to your community can all play a huge part in whether somebody feels able to move forward.

We treat every person we work with as the expert in their own life.

Our role is to listen, help you recognise your strengths and work alongside you to identify the steps that feel right for you.
