Last Friday (Jan 19th) we put on a stall at the volunteer recruitment event at Wigan Youth Zone. The Event gave us the opportunity to have a stall to advertise our current befriending opportunity as well as talking about our family mediation service. The event seemed very well attended by the different organisations with lots of different volunteering opportunities. There seem to be a lot of varied volunteer roles in Wigan.
If you want to or need to volunteer to fill your time, do something rewarding or build some work experience, there would seem to be a role for everyone. From working with adults and/or children to working with allotments and/or animals.
However, the event itself did not seem to attract a lot of people. Is this because it was on a Friday? Was it poorly advertised to the public? Did you know about it? My guess is that the event could have been publicized better. From our point of view it just reminded us that volunteer recruitment is an ongoing process and we cant rely on one-off recruitment events to spread the word about all the good things we are doing at Resolutions.
We have a growing list of people who would benefit from spending 1-2 hours a week with a befriender. It may be to help them get out of the house and become more active. It might be to sit and talk to someone different for that time or it might be to do something specific. Either way we’re looking for people who are reliable and committed and who can be friendly and non-judgemental.
Having spent the last 3 weeks as a befriender myself I can say it is really rewarding – so anyone who is thinking about giving it a go – please get in touch.
